Obituary of Edward DeFino
Edward C. DeFino, a life-long resident of Yonkers, New York, passed away on October 28, 2018 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on June 23, 1940 to Josephine and Edward DeFino. He was the loving husband of Kathleen Mac Sweeney and devoted father of Edward, Adrienne and Jenny DeFino. He is also survived by his sister, Janet Mondelli, several nieces and nephews and countless friends. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Ed is a graduate of the Yonkers Public Schools. He received his BA from Hunter College and Master of School Administration from New York University. He began his educational career in Yonkers in 1966 as a sixth grade teacher. In 1971 he was appointed principal of School 19 and in later years was principal of School 18, the Enrico Fermi School for the Performing Arts and Montessori 31. After his retirement in 1999, he was an administrator in the Tuckahoe Public Schools.
Ed loved his music. He was a professional musician and an accomplished saxophone, clarinet and flute player. He was an avid runner and was so proud to have run and completed the New York City Marathon in 1987. He was also an avid Yankee fan and enjoyed telling everyone that his father took him to see Babe Ruth and that he met the best Yankee closer – Mariano Rivera.
Donations in Ed’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society, The Lustgarten Foundation, Sloan Kettering or the Humane Society.
Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at 9:30A.M. in St. Barnabas Church, Bronx, N.Y.
Interment will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y.
