Obituary of Miriam Gonzalez

González, Miriam, née Ruíz Ortíz, age 75, of the Allerton section of the Bronx, passed away on Saturday, January 16th, 2021, at her home of natural causes. Miriam was a devout Roman Catholic and life-long member of Immaculate Conception Church in the Bronx, where she was a Parishioner for 45 years. Miriam is survived by her husband of 52 years, Arcides González, their two daughters, Vanessa Martinez, née González and Miriam Ortiz, née González, their granddaughters, Ariana Lyn Martinez, Naomi Jade Oritz, Isabella Amanda Ortiz, her son-in-law, Louis Ortiz, her brother, Evel Ortiz, sister-in-law, Miriam Ortiz, niece Jennifer Ortiz and nephews Evel Ortíz and Robert Anthony Ortíz. Miriam was preceded in death by her mother, Antonia Ortiz Ruiz and her father, Hector António Ortíz. Miriam was born on April 19th, 1945, in the community of Cerro Alto, in the town of Lajas, Puerto Rico to her parents, Hector Antonio Ortiz (d.1986) and Antonio Ruiz Rodriguez (d.1996). In the summer of 1957, Miriam, along with her mother Antónia Ruíz and brother Evel Ortíz, migrated to the Bronx from Lajas, Puerto Rico to join their father Héctor Ortíz, Uncle Oscár Ortíz, Aunt Luz Ortíz and Cousin Sonia Ortíz. Shortly thereafter, the family settled on Hoe Avenue in the Bronx. Miriam lived the rest of her life in the Bronx, where she attended Walton High School for Girls, graduating in 1963 and going on to become an Executive Secretary for The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company on Madison Avenue in Manhattan. There she served for the next seven years, until the birth of her first daughter, Vanessa in 1970. In 1968, Miriam and Arcides were married following a year-long engagement. They met at St. John Chrysostom Church on E. 167th Street in the Bronx, where Miriam was an active member of the Legion of Mary and Arcides was also active in Liturgical life as a lay person. It was at St. John Chrysostom Church where they were married on October 5, 1968; the Mass of Holy Matrimony officiated by Father Smith. Beginning in the mid-1970’s, Miriam became an Independent Sales Representative for Stanley Home Products, Tupperware and Avon as a means of providing a second income to support her family. Her innate charisma, contagious enthusiasm and personalized customer service garnered her the loyalty of many customers, who to this day continue to support her family in friendship, care and love. Miriam personally delivered her last Avon catalog to a customer and friend of over 20 years, shortly before her passing, on Saturday afternoon, January 16th, 2021. After raising her two daughters, Miriam embarked on a College career at Bronx Community College of the City University of New York, where she graduated in 1993 with an Associate Degree in Business Administration. Miriam’s College-Work-Study position at Bronx Community College Library’s Department of Acquisitions rewarded Miriam with a fruitful career as a College Assistant at the Library’s Learning Center where she touched the lives of many non-traditional students such as herself. Miriam was well loved by all of her colleagues at the library from which she retired in 2010. Miriam was a woman of great faith, with steadfast devotion to her husband and daughters. She took a personal interest in her co-workers', neighbors' and fellow parishioners' families; attentive to their joys and celebrations as well as personal struggle. Her positivity and optimism ever contagious, her smile always filling the room. She will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched. With everyone’s health and NY regulations in mind, the number of visitors must be monitored. Mourners will be asked to be patient and must prepare to wait outside the building. Visitors will be cycled through while practicing social distancing so that all may have the chance to pay their respects. Please remember, the sick, elderly and those with compromised health, should avoid public settings A Mass of Christian Burial will be held… Our Parishes are also practicing recommended guidelines, limiting the number of people that may gather in church.
