I only today heard about Hugh's passing and wanted to send my sympathy to his family and friends and tell a brief story. At one of the lowest and saddest points in my life, Hugh made a gesture of such kindness that even today I feel comforted just remembering.
About 30 years ago, I was part of a three person "gang" of friends -- all administrators at the City University of New York -- who regularly made the old location on 45th Street location our home on Fridays. We were in our mid to late 30s and there wasn't any other place where we felt so welcome and relaxed. That, of course, was Hugh's doing, bless his soul. We three had our lives and our careers and our friendship ahead of us, as well as a shared sense of humor that always resulted in completely uncontrollable laughter.
Until it ended. Our friend Bob -- a big, proud Irish guy of endless kindness -- died suddenly and without warning. The remaining two of us had lost a great friend at a young age. It was really a hard time.
At the university campus then on 42nd Street, people were devastated and began to plan a memorial service that we knew would attract quite a crowd. But we also knew that it would be hard to get through the service. It was.
I delivered one of the eulogies, and remember feeling completely lost in the crowd. But as I stood there speaking, I suddenly saw Hugh walk in the back and sit down. This gesture meant so much to my friend and me, and gave me such a rush of comfort, that -- while the grief would last for years -- his presence began almost immediately to lighten our load. The memories of the joy we had shared at Hugh's "home" helped us begin the process of healing. And we never learned how Hugh had learned of Bob's passing.
What do you say of such a man? I've never been able to find words to adequately describe the impact of one simple act of kindness by one magnificent man who at times seemed as bright and warm as sunshine itself.
The great Irish poet Seamus Heaney once wrote: “At a certain age, the light that you live in is inhabited by the shades…I’m very conscious that people dear to me are alive in my imagination…These people are with me. It’s just a stage of your life when the death of people doesn’t banish them out of your consciousness, They’re part of the light in your head.”
A man like Hugh could never be banished from our consciousness. And, without a doubt, will always be part of that light and fully and vibrantly alive in our imagination.
With warmest wishes,
Steven Gorelick

Dear Emmet, Maureen and Kevin,
In my mind's eye I can see your Dad, boots on and trousers rolled up, leading us and assorted dogs on great summer "expeditions", bilberry picking on Bin; climbing Cuilcagh's boggy slopes or exploring a rocky Atlantic shoreline. The sun didn't always shine (in fact it rarely did) but that didn't matter. For with Hugh's energy, enthusiasm and sense of fun, every outing was an adventure with endless possibility.
They were long and happy days with you and Uncle Hugh, and I will never forget them. May your memories of those childhood Swanlinbar Summers also have the power to gladden your hearts, even in these toughest of times.
My deepest sympathies go out to you, to Aunt Maureen, to all Hugh's grandchildren, and to extended family and wide circle of friends.

Sincere condolences to Maureen and family on Hugh's passing. It is with great sadness that I learned of Hugh's passing. Hugh was an iconic leader in the Irish American community, an astute businessman for sure, but much more than . Hugh had a welcoming spirit towards his clients in his many restaurants and beside his professional life Hugh was a true Irish Patriot who never missed an opportunity to give aid and comfort to anyone in need. I worked closely with Hugh during the dark days of the 1970s. 80s, and 90s when the British Occupation of Ireland was committing great atrocities on the people of his native Ireland whom Hugh loved so dearly. I clearly recall his leadership in organizing large demonstrations outside to the British Consulate, his ability to engage anyone who had a service that could be utilized at such events./loud speakers, singers, advertising, access to flatbed trucks, access to television or newspaper personalities or clergy who were willing to support the cause of Irish Freedom, Hugh was constantly on the lookout for support. He was relentless in seeking aid and support for the Irish freedom! Thru the long dark days of the Hunger Strikes, Hugh would leave his restaurants in the capable hands of his staff and stand outside Grand Central Station handing out thousands of flyers to enlighten our NYC neighbors of the atrocities that the British State was imposing on young Irish men and women who were languishing in British prisons in Ireland. His Saturdays were spent outside the British Consulate standing at the foot of the flatbed truck, which was the center of the demonstration activity, from there he would quietly manage the activities of the event. After long hours of managing the demonstration Hugh would invite the organizers back to O'Lunney's to replenish body and soul on delicious hamburger platters which were a trademark of his fine food and service. In true Hugh style however, he never missed the opportunity to review events of the day, so that the next demonstration would be that much better.
In fond and loving memory of a man whom I greatly admire as well as Hugh's loving wife, Maureen, who also played an important role because,' Those who wait also serve,' when called upon in very difficult times in history. May the road rise to meet you, dear friend, and may the Irish Patriots be at heaven's gate to welcome you with open arms.
Brigid Brannigan, South Armagh and NYC

Tributes at death of respected New York businessman
The Lunney family celebrated 50 years in business in 2018
Tributes have been paid following the death of proud Cavan man and New York entrepreneur Hugh Lunney.
Mr Lunney was a hugely respected figure in the Irish community across the Atlantic, where he operated the iconic O'Lunney's Times Square Pub, located on 45th Street in Manhattan.
For years Mr Lunney, a native of Swanlinbar, open the doors of O'Lunney's and his other hostelries to a wide array of groups, and with an especially warm welcome to anyone with news from “home”.
Mr Lunney previously operated O'Lunney's on 44th Street, near the corner of Fifth, for nearly 27 years before moving his venerable business right into the heart of New York's theatre district.
The Lunney family celebrated 50 years in business in 2018, though closed the doors to O'Lunney's last year after suffering as a direct result of the Covid-19 economic slump.
Throughout his life, Mr Lunney was an ardent Irish Republican. He firmly supported the cause for a united Ireland and was a member of the Fenian Memorial Committee of America.
He was the first person to sign the 'One Ireland One Vote Petition' at an event held in New York held in 2020.
“All who knew him and loved him will grieve his loss. He was a generous, thoughtful, humorous and loyal man who politically longed for a united Ireland and who personally believed in the path of Divine Providence,” said a spokesperson for the Fenian Memorial Committee of America.
Mr Lunney was also a member of the New York Hibernians.
Another tribute, posted online by the New York ‘Mary from Dungloe' festival committee, remembered Mr Lunney and his family's generosity, and how he was among the first to sponsor the event when it first began.
Mr Lunney passed away last week, Thursday, February 18, two days after celebrating his 85 birthday, and following a battle with illness bravely borne.
He is survived by his wife Mary, sons Emmet, Kevin and daughter Maureen, extended family both in Ireland and America, and very many friends.

Remember
Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

My wife and I met Hugh while in New York a few years back — I had known him through email, relating to his support for our work at home towards Irish Freedom, but we had yet to meet in person. We were walking past his bar, on our way to our hotel, coming from Times Square one evening, and saw him standing at the door. I introduced myself and he brought us in and treated us like royalty for the rest of the evening. It was great to have put a face to the name and to have had the pleasure of this great man’s wisdom and company. God be with those Hugh now leaves behind and may God give rest to his noble Irish soul. Rest easy Mr. O — a man of integrity.

It was with deep regret and profound sadness that I have learned of the passing of Hugh. May the Lord have mercy on his soul and may he rest in peace. My sincere sympathy goes to his wife, Maureen to Emmett, Kevin and Maureen, to the extended Lunney family and to all who mourn his passing.
My memories of Hugh are long standing, are legion, and shall never be erased from the memory. When we first met Hugh was wearing fatigues and I was wearing the whites of an army medic. Bonding was immediate as I listened to his Cavan accent and realized that he was a fellow- born Irishman in the service of Uncle Sam. We became the best of friends, shared the ownership, first of a 1951 automatic Nash Rambler and later a manual 1949 Chevy in which we roamed around the Island of Oahu on our days off. We went to the Big Island (Hawaii) on the third flight after two previous flights, on which we had been aboard, returned to Hickham Field due to mechanical failures. There were a lot more seats available on the third flight than on the previous two.
Hugh was such a gritty guy that he managed, beyond all belief, to get a hop to Molokai because he wished to visit the Island of Damien the Leper, where as a rule, no Air Force Flights were ever destined. He had the self confidence and know-how to persuade the pilot to drop him off on Molokai before the pilot continued his onward flight and to land in Molokai once more on his return journey to pick-up Hugh again to take him back to Hickham Field, a short bus ride to Hugh's home base at Schofield Barracks.
In the summer of 1959, upon completion of active service, Hugh and I returned to the mainland and settled in New York, he in Troy, New York, and I in Rockaway Beach. We kept in touch and I soon persuaded him to come to New York, which he agreed to do. He found work in New York in various capacities including that of mail clerk at the Waldorf Astoria but mainly as a bartender. We met every week-end in the early days at the City Center Ballroom before Hugh decided to fulfill his dream to go into the family business. He settled for a time in Monroe, New York, where he operated a dancehall bar called Hennessy's Inn. I worked there as a bartender on the week-ends and my brother worked as a bouncer to keep the youthful patrons in check. My brother met his wife there, one of the lovely young waitresses at Hennessy's Inn. The business was quite successful owing to Hugh's great management abilities.
Hugh prospered at Hennessy's Inn, sold the business and opened his first venture in the Big Apple in midtown near Fifth Avenue. I had married in the meantime and Hugh was in my wedding party. My wife, Eileen, RIP, was one of the young Irish waitresses at Hugh's place, of whom it was said, "You cannot see the fairest for the trays. It was a busy place that also prospered along with O'Lunney's of Second Avenue and eventually O'Lunney's of Times Square. The latter, a most successful business that was lost to the Corona Virus and, which was salt with by Hugh with great patience and aplomb.
I recall the time we welcomed Hugh's brother Paddy to New York from Ireland and his entry into the bar business. He operated a successful bar on Ninth Avenue named for his twin sons and called "The Twins". We also welcomed Hugh's sister, Ena, to New York. She eventually returned to Ireland and settled once more in her native county. During every visit that I made to Ireland, in long years past, I always drove up to the border town of Swanlinbar to see see Hugh's mother, RIP, his sister, Margaret Mary, and his brother Dr. Aidan Lunney M.D. Nowhere on earth could I have met a more endearing and warm family. Hugh, of course was made from the same mold. He was brave and fearless in distress and he had the strength to subdue and did subdue many 's the disorderly persons he met in the course of his business duties. Yet he had the forbearance and social skills to handle minor disturbances with the art and diplomacy of an ambassador. He was, indeed, a man for all seasons and all situations. His likes will not be seen again. We are greatly diminished by his passing yet we have been superbly enriched by his kindness, by his fellowship, his love of country, both the land of his birth and the country he served so well in the U.S. Army and by his devotion to his civic duty in the land of his adoption.
I deeply regret that due to infirmity, and due to Covid instructions and other conditions that I will not be able to make the trip to New York to attend the funeral rites. I will certainly be there in spirit. For whatever days that are left to me on this earth I will never forget the friendship and camaraderie I had with Hugh and I will aspire to have his wit and wisdom, his sanctity and grace so that I will be worthy to meet him, once more in the home of our heavenly father.
God save Ireland, God bless America, and God bless the dear family that Hugh leaves behind him and God bless all who mourn his loss.

My deepest condolences to all the Lunneys from myself (Niamh Ring) and from my mother Eithne O'Halloran, the daughter of Hugh's aunt Kathleen Prior. Hugh was a generous and kind person, who gave me a job way back in the late 1980s, when I came over from Ireland for the summer. You are all in our thoughts.

Hugh gave me my first gig when I moved to NYC in 1979 and supported hundreds of musicians over the decades. A fervent patron of culture, civility and justice, Hugh became a treasured friend and introduced me to individuals and experiences that have enriched my life in deeply meaningful ways. From the annual 7am pre-parade Grand Marshall breakfasts on 44th Street to the 2am Second Avenue swings, Hugh provided opportunity and inspiration to a young artist navigating the vagaries of the entertainment profession.
His warm personal qualities touched hearts and drew people together under the refuge of his hospitality and thanks to his patience and perseverance his establishments continued to grow with each iteration, contributing to the health and vitality of the city and beyond. Though self effacing, Hugh's personal and societal contributions are significant and if you were lucky enough to be in close proximity to their impact, his circle of generosity and good will blessed you as well.
Heartfelt Condolences to Hugh's Loving Family and Devoted Staff.

I never had the opportunity to speak with Hugh on a one to one basis, but his actions and the way he carried himself told me all I needed to know. His kindness, generosity and acceptance of people stood out in a way I can only hope to emulate.
My heart goes out to the family and all those who lives he enriched.

My deepest condolences to the O'Lunney family.
He always greeted enthusiastically at his establishment, and even dressed the part. I join many fellow Trek fans in thanking him for the valuable memories!

Mr. O’Lunney was a lovely and gracious man who had the curiosity to listen to the details of a person’s life; the kindness to retain them; and the charm to bring them up in conversation. I always enjoyed seeing him and spending time talking to him. We love you, Emmett, Debbie, Delia, and Alanna. We are thinking of the entire O’Lunney family. God bless Mr. O’Lunney and all of you.

Hugh was a member of our Fenian Memorial Committee of America Board of Advisors, a long-time benefactor and a lifetime Irish republican. All who knew him and loved him will grieve his loss. He was a generous, thoughtful, humorous and loyal Cavan man who politically longed for a united Ireland and who personally believed in the path of Divine Providence.
I met him more than 40 years ago, and he never wavered in his support for a united Irish nation and efforts to remember those who gave everything to achieve that goal.
He always treated the McLaughlin family, our friends and all the members of the FMCA with grace and generosity. We will miss him terribly.
A Latin Mass will be said for the repose of his soul on Sunday , February 21, 2021 at 6.30 a.m. at St.Mary's RC Church in Providence, R.I.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. May his soul be on the right hand of God.
May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
Slan abhaile, a Hugh!

I had the honor of meeting Mr. O'Lunney in 1990 when his daughter and I were running NYU's Gaelic Society. He was a man with a purpose in his walk and a twinkle in his eye. I worked for him in the late 90's. He was always happy to come into work, could read a room faster than anyone I ever met and took great pleasure in making sure all his customers were happy and felt welcome. No matter who came though the door Mr. O'Lunney would make them feel important.
Mr. O'Lunney was an exceptional business man and community leader. His commitment to Irish music, culture and freedom was an essential part of his being. He was a soft spoken man who's words were well chosen and full of wisdom and wit.
Please rest in peace Mr. O'Lunney. My prayers are with the entire O'Lunney family. May God bless you at this difficult time.

Dear Hugh You may have started life in the same village Swanlinbar Co Cavan as myself. Your friendship and hospitality to Irish people visiting NY was renowned. My daughter and her husband who were both reared in Manchester on the UK were told to check Lunneys in Times Square. After introducing herself she was made to feel very welcome , given loads of memorabilia and invited back later in the day to meet the man himself. Regrettably she wasn’t able to get back later, but she proudly presented me with my pen from O’Lunney’s Times Sq. Hugh may have started life in a village but with his warmth vand personality he touched the world. Rest in peace brother of Swanlinbar .
