Obituary of Joan Folkerts

Joan Irene Folkerts entered this world on November 24, 1928, the 2nd daughter and 4th child of Francis Anthony Graus and Louise Catherine Graus (nee Young). Joan grew up in Woodlawn surrounded by many family and friends. She attended St. Barnabas Elementary and High School and as a Senior, was voted Prettiest Girl in her class. Joan married Herbert Theodore Folkerts in 1947 and raised 5 children: Jeanne Carney, William (Bill), Herbert, James (Jim) and John. Joan was a loving mother and wife, dedicated homemaker, animal-lover (especially cats), and participated in many volunteer activities. She was a long-time member of the Charles Bajart American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliary, worked at Rosary Hill Nursing Home in Thornwood, NY and was a “Candy Striper” at Lawrence Hospital in Bronxville. She was a parishioner at St. Paul the Apostle in Yonkers. Joan was predeceased by her husband and three siblings: Robert Graus, Frank Graus, and Patricia Mark. In addition to her five children, she leaves behind: Her daughter-in-law Donna Folkerts. Nine Grandchildren: Jill, Amanda, Billy, Michelle, Andrea, Matthew, Nicole, John, and Kevin. Six Great-grandchildren: Garrett, Ryan, Evan, Grace, Sara and Penny. Many, many, Graus and Folkerts’ family relatives and countless friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary that Mom belonged to. Checks can be made payable to: "ALA #1122 Troop Fund", and mailed to: Charles Bajart Post, 840 McLean Ave, Yonkers NY 10704. Please note "Joan Folkerts" in the memo of the check. Unfortunately they do not take credit cards or electronic payments. With everyone’s health and NY regulations in mind, the number of visitors must be monitored. Mourners will be asked to be patient and must prepare to wait outside the building. Visitors will be cycled through while practicing social distancing so that all may have the chance to pay their respects. Please remember, the sick, elderly and those with compromised health, should avoid public settings Viewing will be held on Monday, April 12, 2021 from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. in Hodder Farenga Funeral Home, 899 McLean Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10704 A Mass of Christian Burial will be held. Our Parishes are also practicing recommended guidelines, limiting the number of people that may gather in church. Seating for family will be designated, and friends will be allowed in as room permits, however, this will be limited. If you would like to attend the Funeral Mass, please understand that seating cannot be guaranteed and you should be prepared to observe from a distance. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at 10:45 A.M. in St. Barnabas Church, Bronx, NY Interment will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Yonkers, NY 10706
