Rev. Thomas Lynch

Obituary of Rev. Thomas A Lynch

LYNCH - Rev. Thomas A., 55. Beloved Pastor of Our Lady of Angels (Bronx, NY), Immaculate Heart of Mary (Scarsdale, NY), and St. Gregory the Great (Manhattan, NY), died Thursday, April 28, after a long, courageous medical battle. He fought the good fight with dignity and grace.

Fr. Lynch was born and raised in the Bronx, NY, at St. Nicholas of Tolentine Parish. Fr. Tom, as he was affectionately known, is predeceased by his father, Patrick, and beloved brother, Denis. He is joined in heaven by his mother, Margaret “Peggy” Lynch, née Rahilly, who followed him in death on April 30. Fr. Tom leaves behind five loving brothers: John Joe (Dolores), Patrick (Margaret), Timothy (Mary), Kevin (Maureen), and Maurice; and many loving nieces and nephews: Lara, Kerry Ann, Timothy, Laura (John), Patrick, Robbie, Jillian, Aedan, Kevin, and Michael. He was a great uncle to Audrey and John.

Fr. Tom dedicated his life to the service of others and the glory of God. He was much-loved for his kindness to the poor and elderly, his teaching abilities, and his love of family, friends, and the Church. Fr. Tom became fluent in Spanish and was a devoted servant of the Latino and Filipino communities in his parishes. Fr. Tom believed life was precious, as demonstrated by the gift of life he gave to his brother, Maurice, to whom he donated a kidney in 1996.

Fr. Tom attended Cathedral Prep High School in Manhattan and Manhattan College. He graduated from St. Joseph’s Seminary (Yonkers, NY) and was ordained on May 16, 1992. His first parish was Holy Family (Bronx, NY). He was sent to Catholic University and studied Church History as a doctoral candidate. This assignment was followed by a tenure at St. Joseph’s Seminary as a professor of Church History. He was an administrator at the Parish of Nativity in Manhattan and then served as Pastor at Our Lady of Angels (“OLA”) in the Bronx. He established and maintained lifetime friendships with the parishioners at OLA. In 2018, he was made Pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scarsdale, where again, he was loved by His parishioners. Prior to his illness in 2020, he was appointed Pastor of Holy Name of Jesus and St. Gregory the Great in Manhattan.

Fr. Tom will be greatly missed by family and friends around the world. He enjoyed trips to the Jersey Shore, Ireland, Dominican Republic, South America, and Rome, among other favorite destinations.

His family wishes to thank the medical professionals at Mt. Sinai Hospital; the staff and caregivers at Cardinal Egan Residence in Riverdale; and the many fellow priests, friends, and family who greatly assisted him during his illness these past several months.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Fr Thomas’s memory be made to Edward Cardinal Egan Pavillion 5655 Arlington Avenue, Bronx, NY 10471.
