                                                Agnes Beirne’s Obituary

Agnes Beirne peacefully passed away in her sleep in the comfort of her own home in Woodlawn, New York, surrounded by loved ones, at the ripe age of 97 on Sunday evening, April 23, 2023. Agnes was born on July 14, 1925 in Cornamucklagh, near Carrick-on-Shannon County Leitrim to Francis and Bridget (nee McNulty) Beirne. Growing up, Agnes attended school in Ireland with the nuns at Marist Convent in Carrick-on-Shannon.  In 1952, she emigrated to the United States and stayed with her Aunt Jane (nee McNulty) McCann on the Upper West Side, New York, where she continued her higher education for Nursing as a Nurse’s Aide.

Professionally, Agnes was a Personal Assistant responsible for managing the household affairs of Mr. Marc Haas and his wife for many years. While employed with the Haas family, she had the privilege of meeting many luminaries and dignitaries in NYC’s High Society.  After the Haas family passed away, she took care of various families well known in the NYC Socialite circles where she had the privilege to travel and to live with them in different parts of the world including Paris, San Francisco and the Caribbean.

Fiercely independent as well as a generous and devoted person in spirit, Agnes loved to share her time with family, especially taking care of her niece and nephews and later on, their children.  On her days off, she was often seen riding bicycle with them through the neighborhood and having treats after.  She continued to be a big influence and fixture in their lives as well as the next generation of grand nieces and nephews.  Agnes also devoted a big part of her free time to friends, churches and organizations until her passing.  Agnes was active in the County Leitrim Society for many years, holding various offices including Secretary and Vice President, where she worked on numerous dinner dance committees and fundraisers. In 1979, Agnes was presented with the Distinguished Service Award by the County Leitrim Society, and was a Guest of Honor at the 125th Anniversary Dinner Dance of the County Leitrim Society.

Agnes Beirne was predeceased by her parents Francis and Bridget, her siblings - John (Theresa), Angela (Patrick), Francis, Martin and siblings who died young - as well as, her nephews Francis, Thomas and Frank Mularkey (Maureen).

Agnes is survived by her sisters-in-law Mary and Elizabeth.

In the United States, she is survived by her nephews Francis (Tâm), Thomas (Virginia), Martin (Barbara) and niece Marie.

In Ireland, she is survived by her nephews Martin (Caroline), Willy, John (Sheila), Brendan (Pauline), Vincent (Marie), Noel Mularkey and niece Betty Mularkey (John Croucher).

In New York, for her grand nieces and nephews, who affectionately called her “Gigi”, she meant the world to them and was a giant figure in their upbringings with much affection, influence and love.  She is survived by Francis, Robert, Liam, Sean, Margaret, Kathleen, Audrey and Aidan.

In Ireland, England, and Australia she is survived by many more grand nieces and nephews.

Rain, snow or shine, Agnes always attended the daily 6:30AM Mass at St. Barnabas Church. She was also an active member of the Woodlawn Taxpayers Association.

Agnes Beirne will be missed and cherished eternally not only by her family and friends but also by those who have been fortunate enough to have met her!
