Obituary of Haydee N. Mercado

It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Haydee Negron Mercado on Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

Haydee Negron was born on June 5, 1933 in Ensenada, Puerto Rico to Maria Vazquez and Pedro Negron. She married her true love, Carlos V. Mercado on December 31, 1955. They were blessed with three loving daughters, Lourdes Santiago, Yvette Mercado and Evangeline (Vangie) Vargas.

            Haydee and Carlos dedicated their lives not only to their family, but to the Lord. While Carlos studied to become a Deacon in the Catholic Church, Haydee became the first female President of the Hispanic Society of Immaculate Conception Church on Gun Hill Road in the Bronx. While serving asPresident, Haydee helped feed the poor, raised funds for the church and planned several dances and excursions that parishioners spoke of fondly for many years. Haydee had incredible strength in the Lord, and her family and friends would frequently seek her support and guidance. She had a wonderful gift that made people feel at ease to speak with her and to open up to her. 

            Haydee was also an amazing cook, and loved to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, serving her wonderful kitchen creations. She also loved to travel and to capture precious moments in photographs.

            Haydee is survived by two sisters, Elida Negron and Gladys Negron; a brother-in-law, Felix Santos; two sons-in-law, Carlos Santiago and John Vargas; grandchildren, Edgar, Annel, Tanya, Mary, Manny, John Anthony, Adam and Carlos Jr.;  great-grandchildren, Cristian, Mia, Cameron and Olivia; niecesand nephews, Maria Otero, Cesar Mercado, Eddie Mercado, Cristy Mercado, Lisa Fernandez, Kathy Lamb, Mercy Peña, Miriam Peña, Yueli Melendez, Yujito Peña, Michael Santos, Sandra Santos, Carlos Perez and many more grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

​Haydee was predeceased in April 2020 by her beloved husband, Carlos and in August 2020 by her sister, Nadia.

Viewing will be held on Sunday, April 30, 2023 from 2:00 - 7:00 P.M. in Farenga Bros. Funeral Home, 920 Allerton Avenue, Bronx, NY 10469

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. in St. Lucy Church, Bronx, NY

Interment will follow in St. Raymond's Cemetery, Bronx, NY
