Obituary of Eva McGarry

Eva C. McGarry (nee Sharkey), of Yonkers, passed away Friday, May 19, 2023 at 93 years of age. Eva was born on November 13,1929 in Cloonfad, Fairymount, Co. Roscommon, Ireland. She was a registered nurse, having received her training in Warrington, England, specializing in midwifery. In 1955, shortly after she married, she immigrated to America and began an over 40-year career in nursing, first as a maternity nurse at St. Joseph’s hospital in Yonkers, and, later on, in nursing homes. She lived in Yonkers and was a parishioner of St. Paul the Apostle Church since 1955. A devout Catholic, with special devotion to the Blessed Mother, she was a member of the Legion of Mary and,for many years, attended the pilgrimage to Knock, Ireland on August 15. She also made the pilgrimage to Medjugorje.

Never forgetting her roots, she travelled home to Ireland every year (sometime several times) and was a proud member of the Roscommon Society.

She will be fondly remembered for her profound devotion to family and faith.

Eva was predeceased by her loving husband Eamon(2003), her precious son Bernard (2018), her parents, and brothers Walter, Leo and baby Carroll. 

She is survived by her sons, Eamon of Yonkers NY, Brendan (Katie) of Concord, North Carolina, Kevin(Karen) of Melbourne FL, and daughters Margaret Treanor (Brian) of New City, NY and Eva Maher(Mike) of Hartsdale, NY. She is also survived by 20grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Her brother and sister in laws Evelyn Sharkey (Roscommon, Ireland), Mary and Martin O’Dea (Yonkers, NY), Kathleen and Vince McGarry (Roscommon Ireland), and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to acknowledge the amazing “Irish Ladies” who, during the past few years, have provided unending companionship, support and comfort. Mom always believed in God’s gifts, and these ladies are truly a gift. Thank you to Catherine Flood for leading us to Theresa Flynn, Eden Callan, Mary Byrne, Andrea McCausland, Ann Megan and Christine.
